Large Old Turquoise Necklace
  • markharrismarkharris December 2011
Hi, a friend asked me to find out something about an old turquoise necklace he owns.

He would like to know what it is and have an idea of its value.

His aunt gave it to him in the 60's and she had it for years. She was a school teacher in New Mexico in the 40's and 50's.

The length is approx 30 inches and the largest stone is around 1 1/4 inches by just over 1 inch. Beautiful color.

Any information would be much appreciated.

    Hello,

This necklace has a great aged look. The stones appear to be natural, a little washed out. If we had something like this it would probably retail around $900.

Thanks, it''s helpful to have an idea of the value. I have been told it's not a commercial or tourist item so it has a limited market as it's more of historical interest. Would you agree with that? Also, does this kind of necklace have a name?

    Best regards,

I would call it more traditional, worn by locals not so much a tourist trade piece. However, you do have collectors who really like this type of style. It is most likely Santo Domingo made, we call them turquoise beads.
